UK To Vote On Re-Alignment With European Union

On April 13, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that moves to re-align Britain with the European Union would be subject to a parliamentary vote and approval. It has been almost ten years since Britain voted to leave the bloc, and Starmer has voiced his desire to improve relations with the European Union (EU).

According to a government spokesperson, the parliament will be voting on legislation adopt some EU rules. According to Anadolu Ajansi, government officials also added that the move will help “streamline trade and cut red tape that has burdened companies since Britain’s departure from the bloc.” The decision will be beneficial for both businesses and consumers, creating new trade rules that make it cheaper for businesses and consumers to purchase products. Starmer told BBC Radio, “What we’re doing with this piece of legislation is trying to make trade easier so there’s less burdens for businesses and that, of course, translates into lower prices.”

Talks and decisions for this proposal come as a joint Britain and EU summit will occur this summer. This summit is set to bring talks about border cooperation, trade, defense, etc. Further knowledge of the potential move will be more apparent in the summit, which is set to take place in Brussels.

I believe Britain’s move to re-align themselves with EU standards would be a global benefit for peace, considering all the benefits that come with the realignment like modifications to trade and prices. However, every action has it’s an equal and opposite reaction—this being no different. How much power will parliament have after this? It remains to be seen how the UK will balance sovereignty with a re-alignment with the EU, and whether the vote will first come to fruition domestically.
