Israel Confirms Killing Of Hamas Spokesman Abu Obeida Amid Plans To Seize Gaza City

Israel announced that Abu Obeida, the longtime spokesman for Hamas’ armed wing, was killed in an airstrike on a residential building in Gaza City. The strike, confirmed by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, comes as Israel prepares for a large-scale offensive to seize Gaza City after nearly two years of war. Hamas has not officially confirmed his death, while local reports say dozens of civilians were also killed or injured during the raid.

Reactions from international leaders and organizations highlight deep concern. The United Nations has warned that a complete military takeover of Gaza City could bring “catastrophic consequences” for civilians and the remaining Israeli hostages still held in the enclave. The United Kingdom’s ambassador to Israel called such a move “a huge mistake.” Meanwhile, families of hostages protested outside Israel’s security cabinet meeting, criticizing the government for refusing to prioritize negotiations for a ceasefire.

Israel’s targeted killing of Abu Obeida reveals a broader military strategy that emphasizes eliminating Hamas’ leadership. While Israel frames such actions as critical to weakening Hamas’ command structure, these strikes repeatedly result in high civilian casualties, ultimately worsening humanitarian conditions. These targeted assassinations may deepen cycles of violence rather than resolve them. From a peace building perspective, non-combative alternatives such as mediated negotiations, regional diplomacy, and humanitarian ceasefires remain under-explored to this day, despite calls from international actors.

The current escalation is rooted in the aftermath of Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which killed around 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken. Since then, Israeli operations have killed over 63,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials, with more than 90% of Gaza’s homes damaged or destroyed. Conditions of famine have now been confirmed in Gaza City and the surrounding areas. Despite these realities, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to defeat Hamas and expand the war, defying growing global criticism.

The killing of Abu Obeida may mark a symbolic blow to Hamas’ propaganda arm. Still, it also signals a dangerous escalation toward an invasion of Gaza City, where nearly a million civilians remain trapped. If Israel proceeds, the humanitarian toll could become even more catastrophic. For long-term peace, international mediators must push beyond military strategies and prioritize inclusive, enforceable agreements that address the root causes of the conflict, including security, sovereignty, and human dignity. Without this, the war risks spiraling further, with devastating consequences for both Palestinians and Israelis.
