Biden’s Call For Ceasefire: A Critical Step Toward Peace In Israel-Hamas Conflict

On January 12th, United States (U.S.) President Joe Biden called for an immediate ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas before he departs from the Oval Office on January 20th, according to Reuters.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas can be traced to the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. Since 2007, Hamas (officially marked as a terrorist group by multiple European Union nations and the U.S.) has governed the Gaza Strip, which has led to various clashes with Israel. The most prominent clash occurred on October 11th, 2023 in an event that led to the killing of 1,200 people from Israel and over 250 hostages being taken into Gaza, according to the state of Israel. In retaliation to the attack, more than 46,000 Palestinians have been killed by the state of Israel in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian health officials. A large portion of Gaza has been destroyed, and the remaining survivors have faced a significant humanitarian crisis, especially the women and children. In the months following the October attack, prominent international actors and other countries have sought involvement. Many global leaders have emphasized the need for a ceasefire and proper humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza, including the countries of Egypt and Qatar. Israel maintains steadfastness in its commitment to bringing home its hostages, emphasizing that its actions are essential to combat Hamas.

According to the White House, President Biden has emphasized the “need for a ceasefire in Gaza and return of the hostages with a surge in humanitarian aid.” During this time, it is evident that immediate progress is necessary, and a resolution to the conflict is critical. According to Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security advisor, both parties are “very, very close” to reaching a deal concerning both the hostages and a ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also thanked Biden for his lifelong support of Israel and “the extraordinary support from the United States for Israel’s security and national defense.” As Biden’s final term draws to a close, Jake Sullivan emphasized, “We are still determined to use every day we have in office to get this done, and we are not, by any stretch of imagination, setting this aside.” According to the Times of Israel, a Hamas spokesperson gave insight into the hostage deal, stating, “We renew our pledge, and we affirm that their freedom is near.” While an immediate resolution is at the forefront of the peace talks, many remain skeptical. Mazen Hammad, a resident of the southern city of Khan Younis, argued, “We hear that there are negotiations every day, but we see nothing when we see it on the ground then we believe there is a truce.” Real, steadfast change must be made to come to a resolution regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.

While President Biden’s call for a ceasefire represents critical action being taken to end the violence, it does not consider the need for lasting peace beyond that of a ceasefire. Mechanisms for accountability regarding human rights violations are necessary to rebuild trust between both parties. Furthermore, economic investment in Gaza is crucial; ensuring that poverty is addressed in the region and that investments are made in infrastructure will, in turn, quell the voices of extremism and protest. A better quality of life for Palestinians will bring peace to the region, halting future attacks on Israel. Additionally, demilitarizing Gaza in exchange for the rebuilding of Palestine would allow Israel to focus on internal security, and the root cause of hostilities could be addressed. Furthermore, focusing on cultural exchanges and education can foster a positive relationship between both Israel and Palestine, ensuring that division is not a significant issue in the future. International actors like the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization can also encourage collaboration between the two parties. This collaboration can occur in meaningful negotiations surrounding major issues like borders, Jerusalem, and security. While President Biden’s encouragement of a ceasefire is powerful, the future where long-term stability, peace, and acceptance are emphasized must also be a part of the resolution.

President Biden’s call for an immediate ceasefire and return of the hostages showcases a willingness to mitigate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as well as bring the hostages back to Israel. This action highlights the desire for de-escalation in the region and the need for peace.
