Strengthened Relationships Between Russia And Iran

On Tuesday December 12th, the Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed a “major new interstate agreement” between Moscow and Tehran. A phone call was held between the two countries’ foreign ministers to discuss the agreement and speed up the work. This will tighten the political, trade, and military ties between the two countries in the face of Western economic sanctions, further strengthening the Russia-Iran alliance

In the previous week, Russian President Vladimir Putin organized for the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a blitz round of Middle East diplomacy following visits to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to “raise Moscow’s profile as a power broker in the region” according to the news outlet, Aljazeera. The leaders conversed about the Israel-Gaza war and the failure of US diplomacy. Raisi responded with “what is happening in Palestine and Gaza is, of course, genocide and a crime against humanity” and that the issue is “not just a regional issue, it’s an issue for the entire humankind”. Putin pushed for the emphasis of the Middle East issues and proposed that Russia could be the leader for ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The US has since then voiced concern about the growing military relationship between Iran and Russia and the ongoing supplies to Russia to support the war in Ukraine. This strengthened relationship allows the public to perceive the leader’s support and aid to end the Israeli-Palestine conflict but draws away from the war in Ukraine.

There is no surprise that the strengthening of these deferential relations between Russia and Iran are concerning to the West for the security of the world. The military-cooperation between these countries is stronger than ever and expanding. The ongoing relationship could pose future conflicts. Particularly to the US and vocalizing the warning of ballistic missiles being sent to Russia to use for the war in Ukraine. With the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, analysts have mentioned the world is being taken away from the war in Ukraine and giving Russia the upper hand.

Regarding the background in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iran stands by the Palestinian group Hamas while Russia has ties with both Israel and Palestine. Russia has been taking action to support Palestine and gathering developing countries to join in. This is not without tensions from Israel for the support of Palestine because of the Russian ties. It is crucial for the ceasefire in Gaza for what the UN calls “hell on earth”. With restricted access to food, water, and electricity in the Gaza strip that is a pressing issue that needs a peaceful solution. Without overlooking the continued support of Ukraine against Russian aggression tactics, it is crucial in the stability of the world. It is imperative that peace entails throughout this conflict.

This agreement with Russia and Iran expedites the close allegiance. The political, trade, and military ties lead to the possible threat of peace and security for both the Israeli-Palestine conflict and the war in Ukraine. Using aggressive tactics to exploit is never the solution and loses trust and respect. The future is not promised but for the welfare of the world, peaceful solutions need to arise. This can be done through US diplomacy and continued international support.
