U.K., France, And Canada Denounce Israel’s Blockades In Gaza

In response to Israel’s ongoing blockade of food and resources entering Gaza, some Western leaders expressed condemnation and threatened targeted sanctions against Israel. In a joint statement released from the U.K. Prime Minister’s Office, leaders from France, Canada and the U.K. declared that the permanent forced displacement caused by Israel’s operations displays “a breach of international humanitarian law.” The joint censure among these Western allies of Israel indicates the severity of the recent Israeli military operations as having irrefutably caused a humanitarian crisis.

Figures involved in the statement include Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, French President Emmanuel Macron, and the U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. In addition to condemning Israel’s blockade, the leaders denounced the October 7th Hamas attack: “We have always supported Israel’s right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate,” referring to Netanyahu’s recent statement that Israel will allow a “basic amount of food” to enter Gaza. In addition to condemning the blockades, the statement voiced opposition towards Israel expanding settlements in the West Bank, “which are illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state.”

Up until recently, many Western leaders have remained generally silent, likely out of fear of possible apprehension for speaking out against Israel’s actions. However, this recent censure reflects a drastic development regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, especially considering the historic allyship between Israel and each of the countries involved in the statement. The statement itself did an adequate job taking an assertive tone while simultaneously acknowledging the nuance of the conflict. In the statement’s conclusion, the leaders voiced support for a ceasefire and the region’s dire need for a two-state solution as “the only way to bring long-lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve.” Although omitting accusatory terms like “genocide,” the statement underscores its focus on the human toll of Israel’s blockade of food, medicine, fuel, and other vital resources.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine is a historically nuanced and complicated issue. However, Israel’s offensive position in the past few years reveals a severe escalation of violence in the region. Israel has significantly intensified its operations against Palestine, forcing Palestinians further south towards what is left of the Gaza Strip. Since March 2nd, no food, medicine, or fuel has entered Gaza on account of Israeli military operations blocking humanitarian aid. According to a U.N. news report, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (I.P.C.) estimated that one in five Palestinians in Gaza is actively facing starvation. The report also cited a warning from the World Food Programme chief Cindy McCain: “If we wait until after a famine is confirmed, it will already be too late for many people.”

As Israel prepares for renewed military operations and expansion of its occupation, global figures are beginning to speak out against the persisting violence. Although years of destruction, loss, displacement, starvation, and death have overwhelmingly devastated the Palestinian community, this recent statement is an insignia of hope that international powers will no longer remain idle in the face of escalating violence.

Ultimately, resolving the humanitarian crisis resulting from this conflict is imperative to protecting the civilian lives most impacted by the violence. Deliberate starvation falls under the comprehensive definition of crimes against humanity. The blockades demonstrate a systemic campaign to deliberately cause human suffering in order to scourge the Palestinian people. The international community must act swiftly and urgently to get aid back into Gaza and put an indefinite end to the ongoing crisis.
