On February 24th, Russia began their invasion into Ukraine. Since the conflict started, the rest of the world watched the ongoing crisis apprehensively, constantly waiting for more news. Additionally, many people outside of Ukraine have felt significant distress in terms of the ongoing issue. From Ukrainian families experiencing extreme stress and anxiety over their relative’s whereabouts to Canadian citizens who are distressed about the implications of the conflict. Moreover, many fear that a third world war threat is imminent, which is valid. However, some reaction to the ongoing conflict is unorthodox.
In response to the war, there has been an on-slot of memes. These memes mainly discuss being drafted into World War III. Those who made or posted these memes seem to reside in America primarily. However outlandish it may be to some, these concerns appear to come from a place of fear; however, there’s no denying that these memes are highly insensitive and take attention from the actual issue involving Ukrainian citizens. The difference between those making these jokes and the actual reality behind those jokes is that Ukrainian men aged 18-60 have already been drafted. The “jokes” are real to them, and making these jokes is insensitive and offensive.
When others call out this behaviour, their excuse is that this is the way they “cope” with the fear of being drafted. Although it is valid to joke about one’s problems and issues, it is incredibly offensive to be making these jokes in the comfort of your own home. At the same time, many Ukrainians fear for the safety of them and their families. Although these jokes are offensive and insensitive, if one needs to make these jokes to cope with whatever they may be feeling, they should be able to do so. Still, they should make sure those around them are aware or at the very least alright with it so that they do not accidentally trigger someone’s trauma or anxiety.
In conclusion, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine is real and should be taken as such. To make jokes about being drafted into a war while laying in the comfort of your bed is wrong in many ways. Many Ukrainian citizens face a crisis; those escaping Ukraine flee from the only home they ever knew. Ukrainian men who have been drafted fear their life and whether they will survive another day. Ukrainian families in other parts of the world fear for their family’s safety and wonder if they will ever reunite with them. To make jokes about their experience is both offensive and insensitive. We all need to focus on Ukrainians’ livelihoods, and the situations they face.
