A terrorist attack occurred on Saturday, June 5th in central London around 22:00 GMT. Three attackers drove a van into pedestrians on the London Bridge before launching a knife attack in Borough Market. Seven people were killed and at least forty-eight people were injured. According to Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, thirty-six people are in the hospital with a “range of injuries,” and twenty-one are in critical condition. According to the BBC News, Dr. Malik Ramadhan of the Royal London Hospital reported that one man, who had been shot in the head, had been treated by his team and was expected to make a full recovery.

The attackers drove the van onto the north side of London Bridge and crashed the van on the bridge’s south side, crashing into several people before they emerged and ran on foot to Borough Market. While on foot, the BBC reports that the attackers appeared to target individuals in restaurants and bars. Some people fought back using glasses and chairs before police urged bystanders to run or hide. Over one hundred calls were placed to the London Ambulance Service.

The BBC quotes eyewitness Gerard Vowls, who said that “They were running up shouting, ‘This is for Allah.’ They stabbed this girl maybe 10 times, 15 times.” According to the BBC, Elisabeth O’Neill, mother of 23-year-old Daniel O’Neill, one of the stabbing victims, said that Daniel “had just stepped outside the bar for a second and a man ran up to him and said ‘this is for my family, this is for Islam’ and stuck a knife in him.”

All three attackers were killed within minutes of the attack as the police took what has been labeled an “unprecedented” number of shots at the attackers, who wore fake suicide vests. The BBC reported that Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said, “the police reacted knowing the attackers ‘had to be stopped immediately.’” Rowley claimed, “The situation these officers were confronted with was critical; a matter of life and death – three armed men wearing what appeared to be suicide belts.” A civilian was also shot during the attack and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Sunday, June 6, twelve people were arrested by police in Barking, east London, following a raid at a flat that belonged to one of the three attackers. Seven of the twelve people arrested were women and one man was later released without charges levelled against him.
