Tania Cernuschi’s Mission to Rally the World to Support WHO

On January 28th, Tania Cernuschi, a staff member for the World Health Organization, announced her plans to raise one billion dollars for the UN agency following President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would withdraw from the organization.

The World Health Organization, also known as WHO, is an agency of the United Nations created in 1948 and deeply dedicated to international public health. The agency’s primary goal has been to promote public health, serve those who are vulnerable to deadly diseases, and improve healthcare systems around the globe. The WHO plays a massive role in the construction of vaccines and medical research, including the eradication of smallpox, response to global outbreaks like Ebola, and finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. Historically, the United States has been a major supporter of the agency with massive annual donations. However, during his 2020 presidency, Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the organization, leading many to question if the organization would remain stable without U.S. support. The withdrawal of the United States again in 2025 highlights the ongoing challenges and uncertainties the WHO faces in maintaining stability.

At the agency’s headquarters in Geneva, Cernuschi told Reuters, “I was, as everybody, unsettled by the announcement,” further stating that loss of funding will cost lives. Cernuschi highlighted the value of the WTO’s work, “I think we are all privileged here. However, we work for people who are not privileged, and that is why our work is important.” She also emphasized that the work done by the WHO is critical to foreign affairs and global health, pointing out that many donations now come from Ukraine, India, Africa, and other parts of the world. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus voiced his strong support for Cernuschi, “I am proud of her. All the staff are saying we are part of the solution,” he told Reuters. Cernuschi‘s “1 Dollar, 1 World” project asks people to give one dollar to the UN health agency fighting against spreading diseases worldwide. Cernuschi‘s campaign has so far raised around $58,000, a small fraction of her goal since the project’s start last week.

Tania Cernuschi‘s “1 Dollar, 1 World” campaign is commendable and shows bravery in global politics and public health. Her initiative highlights the dire need for new, innovative solutions in a world where political decisions threaten to undermine the health and safety of people across the globe. While Cernuschi‘s goal demonstrates innovativeness and initiative, various obstacles could occur. Her one billion dollar goal demonstrates how difficult it will be to secure financial stability for a national organization on donations alone. Cernuschi must find more public attention and global support to raise one billion dollars. However, her efforts to bring awareness to a very pressing issue in global politics have the potential to be the catalyst for change in the future. Her movement could lead to more substantial international support from other member countries and citizens who deeply understand the issue. The “1 Dollar, 1 World” campaign seeks to prove that even after the withdrawal of the United States from WHO, individuals can still support a sustainable solution to global healthcare.

Tania Cernuschi‘s initiative to raise one billion dollars for the World Health Organization showcases undeniable bravery and highlights the need for public funding. The WHO is seen as a critical organization that supports global public health. While there is still progress to be made, her initiative has the potential to be a catalyst for change and an opportunity to bring awareness to a pressing issue.
