On Saturday, South Korea’s conservative party selected Kim Moon-soo as their presidential candidate for the snap election set to take place on June 3, according to Al Jazeera. 

The upcoming election was enacted due to the impeachment of Former President Yoon Suk-yeol following his declaration of martial law on December 3. The declaration was due to high levels of civil unrest and allegations of increased government corruption. Many viewed his quick decision as an abuse of power, which resulted in the National Assembly voting in favor of impeachment. On the other hand, Kim Moon-soo running for president introduces a new angle in South Korean politics. He is seen as a well-known figure in politics and a former labor activist, and his viewpoints appeal to traditional conservatives and those unhappy with the economy’s current state. This specific election also holds significance because it is not only a competition between candidates but also offers insight into South Korea’s democratic values and vision for the future in the region.

According to Al Jazeera, Kim has pledged to implement business policies if elected and emphasized his intention to take a hard stance against North Korea. He also noted that he intends to create policies that support young and underprivileged workers in South Korea. To build upon this, he said, “I have never abandoned the weakest among us in the lowest of places.” While Kim’s intention to run is clear, Former President Yoon’s Prime Minister Han Duck-soo also announced that he was entering the race. While Han is not a traditional conservative party member, many see him as a competitive candidate. 

While Kim’s support for young and underprivileged members of society is honorable, his viewpoints surrounding future relations with North Korea can be seen as concerning. Historically, harsh stances in international affairs have proven to be unsustainable for lasting peace by leading to division and further conflict. While Kim’s implementation of business policies and social welfare is hopeful, his approach to national security in terms of North Korea is centered around confrontation rather than peace building. This can, in turn, lead to a more profound sense of mistrust and a greater sense of regional conflict between North and South Korea. Instead of an aggressive stance regarding relations with North Korea, Kim should focus on a peace-centered approach, emphasizing diplomacy, respect, and inclusive dialogue. This would allow him to appeal to both parties.
