Slovakia Expels Three Russian Embassy Staff; Report Of Arrests For Espionage

Tensions between the West and Russia have continued to surge amidst the crisis in Ukraine, and reports of espionage from both sides have emerged. Slovakia, which is both a NATO and European Union member state, has decided to expel three Russian diplomats from their embassy in Bratislava, as they have reportedly discovered through their intelligence service that Russian spies are a part of their diplomatic delegation. However, this discovery was in light of the Russian Federation’s arrest of three Slovak nationals within Russia, who were suspected of being spies for the Slovak Republic.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia issued a statement condemning Russia, and asked them to oblige by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The Russian Foreign Ministry, in retaliation, have threatened that this “unreasonable action will not go unanswered.” However, the nature of their retaliation is unclear. Since Slovakia is a member of NATO and the EU, it is highly unlikely that a ‘hot war’ will emerge, but some sort of sanctions or the expelling of diplomats would be a more likely move on the part of Russia.

Accusations of espionage, which is when a person is engaged in intelligence-gathering in a country, are not common events. During the Cold War, the United States’ CIA and the Soviet Union’s KGB reportedly had many informants, spies, and traitors in their enemy’s intelligence services. This allowed for both sides to know about the other side’s knowledge and technologies, but at the same time, led to many deaths of traitors, spies, and even civilians.

The Russian government’s decision to arrest Slovak diplomats and Slovakia’s retaliation now seem like too much of a coincidence, and are almost certainly linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Western diplomats in Russia have probably been spreading their version of the current events in Ukraine, and have therefore contradicted the Russian narrative, and may pose a serious threat to the Russian state. As a result, the Russian government has decided to expel diplomats, which are not a serious event in itself, but might prevent Western countries from continuing their work of explaining the situation.

Ukraine is, and will continue to be, in the spotlight of millions of people around the world. The current situation continues to be worrying, as Russian forces have now seemingly started attacking civilians. In addition to the crisis which is unfolding in Ukraine, refugees in Europe might overwhelm the governments of Western countries and the European Union. The only solution which would be beneficial for both sides is peace, and this will hopefully save Europe and the global community from a much larger war.
