Trump’s Board of Peace
On Jan. 17, the White House published an outline for President Donal Trump’s “Board of Peace” aimed at ending the Israeli genocide in Gaza. Trump’s Board of Peace comes as a step in his “20 step plan” to end the genocide in Gaza. The group on this board contains top billionaires and close Israeli allies, such as Bulgarian diplomat Nickolay Mladenov, in executive positions; Palestinian officials featured on the board are placed in lower-tier positions. In Davos, Switzerland, President Trump met on Jan. 19 with a small group of world leaders at the World Economic Forum from countries such as Argentina, Turkey, Hungary, and Bulgaria.
Many different leaders and countries have voiced concerns regarding Trump’s Board of Peace. French President Emanuel Macron stated that the board “goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza and raises serious questions, in particular with respect to the principles and structure of the United Nations,” according to NBC. President Trump himself stated in Davos that the Board of Peace could replace the current United Nations. Among other countries such as Norway who declined to participation in the board, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the White House’s invitation to appear at the conference in Davos, Axios reports.
Strong allies such as France’s refusal to join this board, and Palestinian representatives’ minimal role, simply presents how this board is a negative shift for global peace. President Trump proclaims the Board of Peace is a greater entity than the United Nations, but if the leader of the genocide he is trying to deter will not involve itself in a call to peace, and the President is undermining Palestinian voices, how can we truly find a peaceful change?
