On Jan. 20, South Africa called for Israeli envoy Ariel Seidman to exit the country after violating diplomatic order. This order from the South African government comes after Seidman insulted and verbally attacked the South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa.
ArSouth Africa and Israel have held a rocky diplomatic relationship since South Africa—a longtime ally to Palestine– accused Israel of genocide against the people of Gaza, according to PBS. Israel has denied these claims and rejected them profusely. This claim and the South Africa’s alliance with Palestine has heavily strained their diplomacy. Follow Seidman’s forced departure, the Israeli government labeled the attack claims false. The Israeli government stated that “[a]dditional steps will be considered in due course,” according to BBC News.
After the removal, the Israeli government fired back by removing a South African diplomat to Palestine from Israel. However, South Africa and Palestine are not the only nations involved in the diplomatic tensions: according to PBS, the removal of Seidman could also provoke the Trump administration, as the U.S.–specifically President Trump– is a strong ally to Israel and a strong critic of South Africa’s government. Just last year, a South African diplomat was expelled from Washington D.C. for criticizing the “Make America Great Again” movement that Trump campaigned under in 2024. The Trump administration claimed the South African government was anti-American and that they went against American orders and diplomacy.
With both countries having close bonds with others that tie into the Israel-Palestine conflict, peaceful diplomacy may be hard to grasp for South Africa and Israel. It’s important that both countries take necessary steps to preserve peace and balance their diplomatic interests.
