On March 23, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong announced at a summit that current talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi would stall if Japan sticks to its “anachronistic approach.”

In November 2025, Takaichi announced ideas of meeting with Kim Jong Un—which has been unheard of from Japanese leaders for decades. According to CNN, Takaichi shared to supporters at a rally, “I want the leaders to face each other directly and achieve concrete results. I am determined to break through and resolve the abduction issue during my tenure.” Her optimism may be a change of tune for Japan, but the opportunity has fallen short as Kim Jong Un’s desire to interact with Japanese allies like the United States and South Korea are nonexistent. Later confirmation now comes from the Supreme Leader’s sister Kim Yo Jong, who shared to North Korean state media, “If the prime minister of Japan seeks to resolve its unilateral matter not recognized by us, our state leadership will have no intention to meet or sit face to face with her.” 

Throughout Japanese history, prime ministers have been uninterested on finding any sort of middle ground with North Korea. However, Takaichi is shifting from the normal approach. Her conviction for change could be the remedy for conflict if she is persistent. It is key to remember that North Korea has not been in communication with Japanese allies like the United States since 2019. Change is unlikely, and according to North Korea, Japan must change their perspective before a peace summit can arise.  

With tensions remaining at large, peace may be hard to grasp. However, a new era in Japan just may be dawning.
