The Borno State Police Command has dismissed media reports suggesting that policewomen and wives of policemen were abducted by Boko Haram on June 20. The Police denial was made in a press statement signed by Mr. Victor Isuku, spokesman of the command.
Media reports had claimed that Boko Haram terrorists attacked military/police escorted convoys at Abari and Dalwa village at about 11:30 a.m. One of the reports claimed that “16 female passengers in the bus trailing the ambulance carrying the late Sergeant Rahila’s corpse were policewomen and wives of policemen asked to join the burial party, all of them were taken away by Boko Haram terrorists.”
The police in Borno State had said at least two persons, including a police officer were killed while six others were injured. The police, however, keep denying knowledge of the abductions.
The Borno Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Isukwu, categorically stated that the command was not aware of such abductions. This denial was made even though relations and colleagues of the abducted persons lamented that the 16 policewomen were missing.
“For the avoidance of doubt and to put records straight, there are no Policewomen under Boko Haram terrorists’ captivity, as claimed by the sect’s leader,” said the police.
However, in a YouTube video released on Monday, Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, confirmed that his group did carry out the Damboa ambush. Shekau, who spoke in a very unusually calm manner, appeared in a room sitting alone with his AK47 rifle across his shoulder and a huge chewing stick in his right hand.
In a 17-minute video posted online, he lampooned the military for saying Boko Haram has been defeated and stated that the abducted women have become slaves of the sect. He described that “What we did is nothing compared to our women, children and friends that have been wiped out or arrested for many years by the Nigerian government. We only abducted them to serve as slaves to us.” The elusive terror kingpin stated that the female officers the sect abducted are no fewer than 1o.
He also issued an unusual threat to Muslim clerics, whom he said are misleading the world on the true teaching of Islam. The video clip featured some of the Muslim clerics as they condemned the existence and activities of Boko Haram.
