On September 23rd, Israel launched “Operation Northern Arrows,” hitting Lebanon with several airstrikes over the course of a week. On October 1st, the I.D.F. escalated to a ground invasion, with troops crossing the United Nations-designated “Blue Line” into southern Lebanon’s Kafr Shuba region. The operation targeted Hezbollah positions in a “limited ground action.” Also on October 1st, Iran launched a large-scale missile attack on Israel, hitting multiple Israeli military facilities. These actions have expanded the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict into a broader confrontation involving Lebanon and Iran, thereby rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Iran’s October 1 missile attack on Israel was seemingly committed in defense of Lebanon. Two days before the attack, Iranian President Hassan Pezeshkian had stated that Israel’s repeated attacks on countries aligned with Iran’s “axis of resistance” would not be tolerated and that Lebanon must receive support.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (O.C.H.A.) issued an emergency appeal to assist the one million displaced Lebanese civilians affected by Israeli shelling. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon over the past two weeks have killed more than one thousand people. With violence continuing to escalate, further displacement is expected.
Israel’s invasion and Iran’s direct involvement reflect the rapidly worsening conflict in the Middle East, which has been intensifying since the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict began last year. President Biden has been reluctant to take more aggressive actions to influence the deteriorating situation, such as cutting off U.S. military supplies to Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has used Biden’s hesitancy to his advantage, forcing the U.S. government to tolerate Israel’s extreme military actions that have violated international norms and caused an escalating humanitarian crisis. Israel has repeatedly ignored the U.S. government’s political and strategic concerns, leading to a situation where the once-powerful U.S. is no longer able to restrain the behaviors of its ally or influence other countries caught up in the conflict.
The Pentagon previously reported that more U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East are ready for deployment as tensions increase. According to the latest releases from the White House National Security Council, President Biden has instructed U.S. forces to assist in defending Israel against Iranian missile attacks. Israel is set to hold its first emergency security cabinet meeting in a bunker in Jerusalem, evaluating the Iranian missile attacks.
Israel’s ground invasion of Lebanon is in direct defiance of the Blue Line, a demarcation line drawn by the U.N. in 2000. The line cuts a border between Lebanon and Israel, the original purpose of which was to determine whether the Israeli troops that intervened in the Lebanese civil war had completely withdrawn from southern Lebanon. Israel’s unilateral military invasion into Lebanese territory, following earlier bombings and assassination operations on Hezbollah, is also a trample on the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which was passed in 2006 to call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
In a three-minute video released by Netanyahu on X, he threatened that there is no place in the Middle East that Israel cannot reach. Netanyahu’s threats might prompt more countries hostile to Israel to join the melee, in an eager attempt to disprove his continuous threats.
Bolstered by U.S. military support, Israel is now engaged in ground operations in Lebanon and “preparing a response” to Iranian missile strikes, placing the country at war with at least three Middle Eastern nations including Palestine. Stronger deterrence from the United Nations Security Council and major powers to force a ceasefire among the parties involved is an urgent necessity. Intervention must not be limited to simple and repeated verbal condemnation but must include economic sanctions and war crime charges. It is also vital for neighboring nations to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further expansion of the conflict and avoid exacerbating what is now clearly the seventh major Arab-Israeli War, which could lead to unimaginable devastation.
