Greenland Stands Firm Against The Trump Administration’s Pressure

Tensions are escalating between the United States and Greenland as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to threaten his pursuit of the nation. His interest is not new; he first mentioned his goal of purchasing Greenland in 2019 during his first term, according to the Arctic Institute. His fixation has only grown. Since entering his second term this past year, the president has become even more insistent on this target. Despite opposition from many American officials, including members from his own party, Trump has shown no hesitation on this matter. The Washington Post reported that “a bipartisan delegation of U.S. lawmakers…traveled to Copenhagen to reassure the leaders of Denmark and Greenland”. This move highlights the growing divide within the United States government on foreign policy outlooks and efforts to address emerging threats.

The United States government does not have sole influence regarding the fate of Greenland and its people. Greenland is a sovereign country that will not succumb to the will of the American government, as many demonstrators have made clear to the international community. According to Politico, thousands of protesters in Denmark and Greenland have called for “Hands off Greenland” in their stand against the threats made by Trump. Growing concern has become salient across many countries, including Denmark, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Germany, the U.K., Sweden, and Canada, as reported by Time. Leaders all over the world are voicing their concerns over the developments and intentions of the U.S president toward Greenland.

Allowing world leaders to act with impunity leads to more destabilization, unrest, and tension in the international community. One of the most fundamental aspects of international politics is state sovereignty, which guarantees each nation’s right to control its own affairs. The very idea, let alone the threatening aspects of President Trump’s plan, completely undermines Greenland’s sovereignty and can be viewed as “absurd”, according to The Guardian. Leaders in the international community must respond to this course of action by refusing to entertain such notions. However, some actors have deemed these circumstances justifiable, showing a lack of respect for international norms.

Within the U.S. government, the president’s plan has received pushback from officials, even within the republican party. However, several officials justify or fail to condemn the concerning threats made by President Trump. As reported by Time, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that “utilizing the U.S. military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief’s disposal.” This exemplifies not only the justification of such ideas but the enabling of combative courses of action to attain the goal of acquiring Greenland. This kind of language and rhetoric contradicts that of many other officials worldwide and within the U.S. Senator Murkowski of Alaska voiced her concern in the Washington Post, stating that “Greenland needs to be viewed as our ally, not as an asset”. When it comes to the violation and encroachment on basic international norms, no one should encourage this behavior. Rather than pursuing such measures, the administration should evaluate the appropriateness of its course of action and the implications that may follow. Officials must face backlash when they act recklessly, both from their peers and from the international community.

This development has a variety of implications for the actors involved and the broader international community. Tensions are rising as Trump maintains his argument that “Greenland is vital to U.S. national security and has refused to rule out coercive measures to acquire it” according to Politico. This complicates diplomatic relations within N.A.T.O. because Denmark is a N.A.T.O. member and an ally of the U.S. Multiple actors have threatened potential military involvement, making the conflict even more combative. There is a clear lack of precedent and authority for the United States government to threaten such action against Greenland. Doing so demonstrates a disregard for international norms and state sovereignty, leading us to question, if the president has the confidence to threaten this, what else will he do?

This case is not only about one particular development but about what it represents for the broader international community. Events like this erode peace and stability for the nations involved and create uncertainty for those watching and wondering what may come next. It reflects a dangerous notion that political interests and motivations can override the pursuit of peace within the international system. As this crisis develops, leaders of all nations must reflect on their role in international affairs and the decisions they make. Escalation and greater instability can be avoided through adequate accountability and respect for international norms. Leaders are in a position of power that can embolden them to exploit that power for personal gain. Leaders today mustn’t see this as business as usual; they must continue to question, critique, and combat impunity to promote peace.
