On Thursday January 2nd, Elon Musk, a US billionaire now part of the president elect’s government, accused British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of overlooking “rape gangs” for being unjust. Musk is creating a commotion in the United Kingdom’s political agenda by attacking Starmer about when he was the director of public prosecutions over a decade ago.
This meddling began because of the sudden change in the UK’s political scene bringing an end to the 14 years of Conservative rule. Musk is seemingly pushing and feeding into the British far-right party to cause trouble within the kingdom. Swiftly following Musk’s comments, the British Health Secretary Wes Streeting claims that his views are “misjudged and certainly misinformed”. Spurning Musk’s claims that the British Government were botching former grooming scandals. This news stems from the Oldham scandal from over a decade ago, where gangs of mainly Pakistani men would rape young white English girls. Streeting proceeded to comment that the upcoming US government should tackle their own issues of child sexual exploitation. Following with “So if he wants to work with us and roll his sleeves up, we’d welcome that”.
With the reelection of President Trump, Musk has been creating a fuss within Europe supporting far-right parties with his new political upper hand. His political and cultural influence is growing and only surging with the new administration arriving in late January. The billionaire’s words are reaching well beyond the tech world, and it is time for the world to start paying attention. What is going to happen beyond the US’s borders is something only time will tell.
The UK child grooming scandal has long stirred controversy across the country due to the abuse of young girls in English towns and cities. In 2006, Samantha Walker-Roberts, was gang raped in a house in Chadderton, Northwest England and the perpetrator was jailed for six years but released on a license after three years. The survivor now is calling on the UK government to introduce government reforms on rape issues and releases. Calling for justice for voices around the country to be heard.
Altogether it is critical to remember politics can be highly influenced by our ever changing and interdependent planet. Having an open-mind and being respectful are two ways to keep harmony within our communities. As well as bringing justice to these abused oppressed communities. Everyone’s voice deserves to be heard and brought to justice.
