The governing Liberal Party of Canada has announced new proposals aimed at reaching net-zero carbon emissions. The government also outlines the steps that they will follow every five years from 2030 to 2050 and will provide regular progress reports. As Canada is a signatory to the Paris Climate Agreement, this contract promises that net-zero emissions will be achieved by 2100. This plan will ensure that any emissions that are produced will be absorbed through plants/trees or buried using carbon capture technology. This is efficient as it will acquire excess carbon in the atmosphere, which plays a role in the rise of global warming. 

Critics argue this plan has no precedence if the government does not follow through, stressing that they have not fulfilled their previous plans to resolve environmental issues. Furthermore, greenhouse gases are not being heavily produced during the pandemic. While the largest corporations contribute overwhelmingly to global greenhouse gas emissions, the rise in unemployment and reduced hours as a result of the economic downturn has decreased climate change issues. This is evident as U.S emissions have dropped 9.2% in 2020. 

The bill was tabled by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this week, but he does not have a sustainable plan. This is because the bill simply states target goals and the timelines in which they would be achieved. However, the government did not provide any details on actionable items. This creates uncertainty, and it is unclear whether this plan will have any effective change on environmental issues. 

The Paris Agreement outlines that by 2030, Canada should have reduced its carbon emissions by 30%. It is apparent that Canada has not achieved their 2020 target and will possibly miss the 2025 target. Nevertheless, Trudeau remains optimistic stating that he hopes to exceed the targets that are set for 2030.  It is imperative that the country maintains realistic and attainable goals. In addition, the Canadian government should prioritize environmental issues, such as global warming. This is because the world only has a small amount of time before the effects of climate change is unable to be reversed. This means that after a certain point, it is possible that the effects will be so harmful that Earth will become inhabitable. Thus, it is important that the Canadian government creates actionable items so that they can be held accountable for their plans.
