U.S. Warns Of Signs Pointing To Another Chemical Attack In Syria

The U.S. has warned Bashar al-Assad’s regime against another chemical attack against the citizens of Syria. In a statement released by the U.S. on June 26, the Syrian government is said to be planning another chemical attack. In the statement, the U.S. claims that it has found potential “evidence” of the attack. The White House also went further to add that if the attack were to happen, the perpetrators would “pay a heavy price.” The statement did not provide any evidence to support the allegation, only that the current preparations in the country are similar to those done just before the April 4th attack that killed dozens of civilians, which led to an airstrike by the U.S. on a Syrian airbase.

“The United States has identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children,” said White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer. He further added that “If … Mr. Assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons, he and his military will pay a heavy price.”

Assad went on record as saying that the attack after the chemical attack on April 4 was “100 percent fabrication” in order to justify an attack that was the most severe on the crisis in Syria by the U.S. since the war began.

Nonetheless, according to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, via Twitter, “Any further attacks done to the people of Syria will be blamed on Assad, but also on Russia and Iran who support him killing his own people.”

It is also important to note that, at the time of the air strike, the U.S. issued a statement saying that the attack was a “one-off” that was intended to discourage the future use of similar attacks and not as a way to expand its influence in the ongoing strife. However, over the past three months, the actions of the U.S. have been suggestive of anything but a one-off affair, as they have been more involved in the war. For example, there was the shooting down of a drone suspected to belong to enemies that was deemed a threat to coalition forces among other forms of attack.

On one hand, one has to wonder about what is going through Assad’s mind, who may be thinking about how he had gotten away with mass murder before, if the accusation against his government for the actions of April 4 are true, and how he can do it again, perhaps on an even bigger scale. He is may be thinking that he has very powerful allies at his disposal, namely Russia, among others. However, the West presents ever-increasing difficulties for the people of Syria. On the other hand, if it is indeed true, then evidence should be presented to the necessary forces and Assad should be tried according to the law., rather than retaliated against by way of force. This is because, violence begets only more violence, no matter how cliché the phrase is.
