Korean Leaders Hold A Surprise Meeting

On May 26, 2018, the leaders of North and South Korea held an unexpected meet-up in a demilitarized zone between the two countries. The encounter was a strange and historic one considering that the Korean state leaders, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in, had only ever met twice before yesterday.

It is safe to assume that most people would be hoping that the event was held in order to reach an agreement that would reschedule the cancelled talks with the US, which were supposed to be held on June 12 in Singapore. In later emerged, however, that President Trump suggested that the meeting could still happen in the future – despite the initial cancellation.

According to the BBC, sources state the meeting between the Korean leaders went well after the two had an exchange of opinions on how to proceed with the organization of the dialogue with the US. This information seems to be an accurate description of what happened, as the US also confirmed that an American delegation will soon head to Singapore to prepare for the tentative summit. Should the talks happen, they will be focused on ways to ensure that all nuclear weapons in the Korean peninsula are removed so as to reduce the mounting tensions all over the world.

As the globe watches on, it is my hope that the talks will happen. This hope is now higher considering that the US president and the North Korean leader had a heated exchange on social media that suggested a nuclear exchange between the two countries is possible. The talks in Singapore will surely be a step in the right direction for the two countries, and for the entire world.
